The word 'wed' comes from the Greek word for 'pledge', that being what you are doing when you get married, pledging your love and commitment to your partner.
Weddings are surrounded by a lot of traditions and sayings but how many do you actually know the origin of?
Ever wondered where the saying 'Something old, something new...' comes from? It actually dates back to Victorian times and the full saying goes:
Something old, something new,
Something borrowed, something blue,
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.
The something old is supposed to represent the link to the brides family and past. Something new symbolised good fortune and luck in the brides new life. Something borrowed is supposed to remind the bride that her friends and family will be there when she needs them. Something blue symbolises faithfulness and loyalty and dates back to biblical times when the colour blue represented purity. The silver sixpence in her shoe gives the bride wealth and happiness.
